The World Bank: Participatory Rural appraisal

Community Orientation Programme

The entire batch of 150 first Year MBBS students are taken through an experiential learning program called Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) in which they are engaged by the department for the entire day with morning briefing and practice sessions followed by afternoon experiential learning in the field (usually two villages each visited by 75 students). Using PRA tools, students and villagers do Community Diagnosis (identify the main problems & the reasons for the problem) as well as develop an Action Plan for a Community Health and Development using local resources and through an Intervention (Health Education) create awareness for behavioural change.

PRA helps the students understand the process and value of community engagement (participation) in Health and development.
